The 19c upgrade destination is here, and AI is baked in at the database layer

Oracle AI Database 26ai is the current long-term support release. If you are running 19c, this is where your upgrade path leads. Here is what actually matters for production environments, and what still needs careful evaluation before you adopt it.

AI Vector Search and native RAG
26ai includes AI Vector Search at no additional charge: store embeddings alongside your business data, run semantic similarity searches in SQL, and build RAG pipelines without a separate vector database. The key operational question is VECTOR_MEMORY_SIZE allocation and HNSW vs IVF index selection for your read patterns. This is the feature that will drive the most DBA upskilling demand over the next two years.
True Cache: application-transparent mid-tier caching
True Cache sits between your application and the database, automatically maintaining transactional consistency without any application code changes. No cache invalidation logic to write. No staleness risk. For OLTP environments with hot read paths, this is the easiest 26ai win you can demonstrate to leadership without a disruptive infrastructure change.
JSON Relational Duality Views
One dataset, stored relationally, exposed to application developers as JSON documents they can read and write directly. Tables stay normalized, constraints stay enforced, indexes stay intact. Developers get their JSON interface. DBAs keep the relational storage model they know how to tune.
Upgrade path: 26ai is a release update, not a version upgrade
26ai delivers as RU 23.26.0: applying it moves you to 26ai features without a full database upgrade project. If you are still on 19c, AutoUpgrade handles the direct path to 26ai. CDB/PDB architecture is now mandatory. If your environment still has non-CDB configurations, that design work needs to happen before the upgrade.
